Titanium 6-2-4-2 is a titanium-aluminium-tin-zirconium-molybdenum alloy primarily used for applications requiring high strength and toughness. Known for its excellent resistance to fatigue and crack propagation, this near-alpha alloy also offers outstanding resistance to corrosion in a wide range of media. Titanium 6-2-4-2 exhibits good creep resistance up to 550°C and has forging and machining characteristics similar to those of Ti 6Al-4V, making it a versatile material for demanding applications.
The weldability of Ti 6-2-4-2 is fair, typically using AMS 4952 weld wire. Various heat treatments are available to enhance its properties. For sheet and strip under 0.1875″ thickness, a duplex anneal involves heating to 899°C for 30 minutes, air cooling, then heating to 787°C for 15 minutes, followed by air cooling. A triplex anneal includes an additional step of heating to 593°C for 2 hours. For plates 0.1875 inches and over, the duplex anneal is done at 343°C for 60 minutes, followed by heating to 593°C for 8 hours. Bars and forgings undergo solution annealing at 25–50°C below the beta transus for 1 hour, followed by air cooling and further annealing at 593°C for 8 hours.
